Keanu Reeves, Diane Lane, John Hawkes Connor O'Neil (Keanu Reeves), a man who constantly avoids taking responsibility and spends his time betting on sports matches. When he asks for help from his close friend, a banker, to pay off his debts, his friend tells him that he can no longer give him money without expecting anything in return. He advises Connor to work and earn money, and asks him to take on the role of coaching the baseball little league team sponsored by his company. Reluctantly, Connor accepts the task, having never taken responsibility for anyone other than himself in his life. He takes on the coaching position for the group of young black children studying at a school in Chicago's toughest neighborhood. As time goes by, Connor finds himself more attached to the children than he ever expected. These children, all under the age of 10, teach him valuable life lessons. Things become even more interesting for Connor when a young teacher named Elizabeth Wilkes (Diane Lane) enters the picture. Ultimately, Connor begins to learn that enlightenment and self-discovery can come in unexpected ways.
