George Bailey (James Stewart), a man on the brink of bankruptcy, is about to commit suicide by jumping into a river on Christmas Eve. He has dedicated his life to his small town and its people, being a compassionate, trustworthy, and helpful person. He successfully navigated the Great Depression, made almost everyone in town a homeowner through his inherited real estate and finance company, but had to put aside his dreams of earning money, becoming an architect, and traveling the world. His acts of kindness in the town clash with the selfish interests of the heartless banker Henry F. Potter (Lionel Barrymore). Potter is constantly after Bailey. One day, an opportunity arises for Potter when a significant amount of money from the finance company falls into his hands due to the carelessness of Bailey's alcoholic and elderly uncle, Billy Bailey (Thomas Mitchell). After a bank inspection reveals the company's deficit, it means bankruptcy and imprisonment for Bailey. Feeling hopeless, Bailey is about to throw himself into the river when an angel named Clarence (Henry Travers) is sent down to save him. The angel grants Bailey's wish to see a world where he was never born. Bailey realizes that this alternate world is not as beautiful as it seems and that people often fail to recognize the countless contributions and kindness they receive from others.
