Michelle Pfeiffer, Kiefer Sutherland, Suzanne Shepherd Kyra Johnson (Michelle Pfeiffer), recently divorced, moves into her elderly mother's house in Brooklyn. In her middle age, Kyra tries to find a job and stand on her own feet. However, her emotional and financial support is completely gone after her mother's sudden death. With no good options left, Kyra starts a relationship with her understanding neighbor (Kiefer Sutherland), who is dealing with his own troubles. But she can't accept the upheaval of her once smooth life and resorts to increasingly dangerous paths to hold onto what remains.
