Melanie Parks (Michelle Pfeiffer), recently divorced and single, is a workaholic woman who has no time for her friends. The most important thing in her life is her son Sammy. On the day when Melanie is about to have the most important job interview of her life, she has to take care of her son and realizes the insignificance of her life throughout the day. Meanwhile, Jack Taylor (George Clooney) is in a similar situation. His ex-wife, who has recently remarried, asks him to take care of their daughter for a week. At the beginning of the day, Melanie and Jack don't know each other, but as the hours pass and people flow through the streets, they unknowingly and coincidentally move closer to each other.
