Dr. Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock), who feels that it is time to make a change in her life, leaves the local Illinois hospital where she completed her internship and accepts a job at a busy hospital in Chicago. The only thing she is sad to leave behind is the beautiful house she rented. Before heading to the city, Kate leaves a note in the mailbox for the next occupant of the house. In the note, she leaves her new address for any letters that may come for her and explains that the mysterious paw prints on the door will still be there when she moves out. However, when the new tenant, Alex, arrives at the house, there is no trace of the paw prints anywhere. Kate and Alex continue to correspond through the lake house's mailbox and realize that they are living in two different years in an incredible and impossible way.
