Andy Kaufman (Jim Carrey), initially known for his solo comedy performances in nightclubs, catches the attention of manager George Shapiro (Danny DeVito) when he appears on the television show Saturday Night Live for the first time with his unusual and bizarre style. With Shapiro's help, Kaufman starts his own show, where he breaks away from the traditional styles of comedy and focuses on shocking the audience rather than making them laugh. Even his closest ones cannot tell when Kaufman is acting or living his truth. Besides his manager Shapiro, his supporters include his friend and co-performer Bob Zmuda (Paul Giamatti) and girlfriend Lynne Margulies (Courtney Love).
